If you’re like many pet lovers, your furry friend is more than just a companion—they’re part of the family. Taking your pet along for a drive, whether it’s a quick trip to the park or a long road adventure, can be a joy. But it also comes with some special challenges to keep everyone safe and comfortable on the road.

From our experience in roadside assistance and towing, we’ve seen how an unexpected pet distraction can quickly turn into a stressful situation. So here’s a friendly, down-to-earth guide with practical tips to make driving with your pet safer and more enjoyable for both of you.

1. Secure Your Pet Properly

This is the golden rule. Pets roaming freely in a moving car aren’t just a distraction—they’re a safety risk for everyone. Sudden stops, sharp turns, or an accident can send your pet flying inside the car, causing injury to them and others.

Invest in a good-quality pet harness that attaches to your car’s seatbelt, or use a well-ventilated crate that fits securely in the back seat or cargo area. This keeps your pet safe and prevents them from jumping around while you’re driving.

2. Never Let Your Pet Ride in the Front Seat

Airbags are great for people but can seriously injure pets if deployed. Plus, your pet can distract you or get underfoot near the pedals. Keep them in the back seat where they’re safer and less likely to cause distractions.

3. Take Breaks for Water and Bathroom Needs

Long drives can be hard on your pet’s bladder and comfort. Plan to stop every couple of hours to let your pet stretch, hydrate, and do their business. Never leave your pet alone in a parked car, especially in warm weather. Temperatures inside a vehicle can skyrocket quickly, putting your pet at risk of heatstroke.

4. Bring Familiar Comforts

Toss in your pet’s favourite blanket, toy, or bed. Familiar smells and objects can help reduce anxiety and keep them calm during the ride. If your pet is prone to motion sickness or anxiety, chat with your vet about safe remedies or calming sprays you can use.

5. Keep Windows Closed or Use Window Guards

While many pets love sticking their head out of a window, this can be dangerous. Flying debris, dust, or bugs can injure your pet’s eyes or face. Plus, sudden stops could cause them to fall or jump out. Keep windows closed or cracked just enough for airflow, and consider window guards designed for pet safety.

6. Avoid Feeding Right Before Driving

Just like humans, pets can get car sick. Avoid feeding your pet a large meal right before hitting the road. A light snack a couple of hours before the trip is usually fine. If you’re going on a long journey, try to maintain their usual feeding schedule as best as you can.

7. Use Pet Barriers if Needed

If you have a larger dog or multiple pets, a pet barrier can help keep them confined to the rear of the vehicle. This prevents sudden darting or crowding in the front seats and gives everyone some breathing room.

8. Practice Calm and Gentle Driving

Your pet can pick up on your mood. Drive smoothly, avoid sudden braking or sharp turns, and keep the ride as calm as possible. Talking softly or playing calming music can help too.

9. Have Your Pet’s ID and Medical Info Handy

Accidents happen, and if your pet gets loose or lost during travel, having up-to-date ID tags and a microchip can make all the difference. Also, keep a copy of their medical records and any medications you might need for the trip.

10. Know Your Route and Emergency Contacts

Plan your route ahead, and know where pet-friendly rest stops or emergency vets are located along the way. It’s better to be prepared than scrambling when an unexpected issue arises.

Driving with pets is a wonderful way to share adventures and create memories. With a bit of preparation and care, you can keep your four-legged co-pilot safe, happy, and healthy—so you both enjoy the journey without worry.

And remember, if the unexpected happens on the road, we’re just a call away to help get you and your pet back on track. Safe travels!
